Tony Awards 2019: “Hadestown” leader indiscusso degli Oscar di Broadway

La 73° edizione annuale dei Tony Awards è andata in scena lo scorso 9 giugno, come di consueto al Radio City Music Hall di New York.

Non ci sono state grandi sorprese tra i vincitori: “Hadestown”, “The Ferryman”, Bryan Cranston e Elaine May hanno ricevuto i riconoscimenti che meritavano, la politica è stata tenuta a bada con pochi colpi ben piazzati, e il conduttore James Corden ha supervisionato il tutto da vero fan accanito di Broadway.

Tutto sommato, la trasmissione dei Tony in onda sul canale CBS ha dimostrato come dovrebbe essere fatta una cerimonia di premiazione: niente di più oltre a quello richiesto da una trasmissione di tre ore, performance tratte dai musical in nomination, alcuni pezzi comici di Corden e uno spettacolo di tutto rispetto per i drammaturghi dei candidati non musicali.

I Tony Awards si sono aperti con il classico opening con un cenno agli aspetti di Broadway che non possono essere interamente canalizzati sul piccolo schermo.
Per iniziare il numero, James Corden, dall’aria sconsolata, era seduto sul divano a casa, ma dopo aver rivelato il Radio City Music Hall, l’attore si è tolto la felpa e si è lanciato in un numero di canzoni e balli su quanto sia più eccitante il teatro dal vivo.
Con battute scherzose su cose come pause bagno inopportune e l’utilizzo di telefoni durante uno spettacolo, la routine ha celebrato il meglio della stagione. E, alla fine del numero, tutti i sette cast di tutti e sette gli spettacoli nominati per il miglior musical e il miglior revival musicale erano sul palco.

Il protagonista della serata si è rivelato il musical “Hadestown” vincendo 8 premi tra cui Miglior Musical, Regia, Partitura e Attore Non Protagonista (Andre De Shields). È diventato così il primo musical nella storia di Broadway con un team creativo interamente femminile a portare a casa l’ambito riconoscimento.

Non è stato da meno “The Ferryman”, vincitore come Miglior Opera Teatrale di quest’anno, che si è aggiudicato quattro premi, tra cui Miglior Regia a Sam Mendes.

La messa in scena di “The Boys In the Band” di Joe Mantello ha conquistato il premio come Miglior Revival di un’ Opera Teatrale e il momento più toccante della serata: un commovente Mart Crowley – salendo sul palcoscenico dei Tony 50 anni dopo il debuttato Off Broadway del suo spettacolo – ha dedicato il premio al cast originale.

“Oklahoma!” si è aggiudicato il riconoscimento come Miglior Revival Musicale e, nelle categorie recitazione, Stephanie J. Block per “The Cher Show”, Santino Fontana per “Tootsie”, Elaine May per “The Waverly Gallery” e, per il suo ruolo di giornalista furioso Howard Beale in “Network”, Bryan Cranston ha dedicato il suo premio ai giornalisti di tutto il mondo “sulla linea del fuoco”.

Ali Stroker, un’attrice in sedia a rotelle, ha fatto storia per aver vintoil premio per la Miglior Performance di un’Attrice Non Protagonista in un Musical (interpreta Ado Annie in “Oklahoma!” di Daniel Fish). Il suo discorso di accettazione ha dato speranza a tutti i bambini con disabilità e sogni.

Il riconoscimento per la Migliore Coreografia è stato assegnato a Sergio Trujillo per il suo lavoro su “Ain’t Too Proud”. Nel suo discorso, Trujillo ha parlato di quando è arrivato negli USA come immigrato privo di documenti e del suo lavoro nel teatro.
