Tony Awards 2020: tra “Moulin Rouge!” e anche un po’ di orgoglio italiano

Dopo due anni e mezzo senza la più grande serata di Broadway, i Tony Awards sono tornati la scorsa domenica 26 settembre.
I premi di quest’anno hanno celebrato gli spettacoli e le performance della stagione di Broadway 2019-2020.

Audra McDonald ha condotto la 74° edizione dei Tony Awards dell’American Theatre Wing, rivelando i vincitori in tutte le categorie tranne tre. Successivamente Leslie Odom, Jr. ha presentato il Tony Awards Present: Broadway’s Back!, con esibizioni e la proclamazione dal vivo di tre Tony Awards, tra cui Best Play, Best Revival of a Play e Best Musical.

Moulin Rouge! – Il Musical” è stato il primo vincitore della serata. L’adattamento teatrale del film di Baz Luhrmann ha ottenuto 10 Tony tra cui Miglior Musical.
Oltre
al premio principale della serata, “Moulin Rouge!” si è aggiudicato il Tony al Miglior Regista di un Musical per Alex Timbers, Miglior Coreografia per Sonya Tayeh, Migliori Orchestrazioni per la squadra che ha intessuto una miriade di successi pop nella colonna sonora, una scalata completa nelle categorie di Design e due vittorie per gli attori Aaron Tveit e Danny Burstein.

The Inheritance” ha invece vinto come Best Play e ha portato a casa un Tony alla Miglior Regia per Stephen Daldry e per due suoi interpreti: Andrew Burnap e Lois Smith.
The Inheritance” ci fa rivendicare un po’ di orgoglio italiano in quanto vede tra i co-produttori Lorenzo Thione, al suo secondo Tony Award dopo “Hadestown”.

«Sono onorato di aver partecipato in piccola parte nel portare questo capolavoro a Broadway.
Spero che potremo festeggiare il ritorno di Broadway e provo grande rispetto verso tutti gli artisti che dato vita a “The Inheritance”.

Ora come si fa a vantarsi umilmente di essere un due volte vincitore di un Tony? Chiedo per un amico!»

L’opera teatrale del drammaturgo statunitense Matthew Lopez racconta di tre generazioni di uomini gay nella New York degli anni 2010. Ha vinto il Laurence Olivier Award alla migliore nuova opera teatrale nel 2019.

“The Inheritance” non è stata l’opera teatrale con il maggior numero di vittorie durante la serata, poiché “A Christmas Carol” ha ottenuto premi in ben quattro categorie di design e ha inoltre vinto il Tony alla Migliore Colonna Sonora Originale.
